1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

Exterior
This one is white and the accent stripes that ride over the wheel openings are red, gray, and black. Big decals were still in vogue for Chevrolet and it clearly spelled out Monte Carlo SS on the doors and decklid. The eggcrate grille is framed by pinstripes and the dual headlights sit recessed in a black bezel giving off a slightly aggressive scowl that's punctuated by the aerodynamic lower valance that houses the marker lights and chin spoiler. A slightly curved shoulder line under the B-pillar and slanted bottom edge to the quarter window help differentiate this car from the Regals and a thinner, more steeply raked, one piece wing is also pure SS. The rear fascia leans forward, and distinct Monte tail lights ride the outside edges of the tail. 15-inch wheels are also exclusive to the Monte SS and help enhance the muscular profile of the car. Imperfections on this car include a touched up scratch, some crackling in the decal stripe, and some flex cracks on the nose piece.
Interior
Maroon velour has a starring role on the door panels including the stitched insert behind the door pull strap. The middle band is dark red plastic and a padded vinyl armrest, all over the carpeted lower panel, and the condition is contradictory to normal use of cars with these many miles. This is not your normal car. Same with the bucket seats which look fantastic matched by the rear bench which looks nearly pristine. We're hesitant to point out any patina on the steering wheel, because it's ever so slight. The red trim on the black dash pops visually and picks up on the bright red needles on the six gauges ahead. A Kenwood AM/FM/CD is in the center stack and our consignor says he still has the original radio! Above the radio is the typical GM climate control panel. The T-handle shifter is in the center console in a black base with red trim and the low pile plush maroon carpet is protected by OEM carpeted floor mats. As GM headliners were prone to failure, this one has been replaced and the visors have been recovered. The trunk is covered with a fitted gray flannel mat and is spotless, holding a space saver spare in a depression on the right side, typical of G-bodies.
Drivetrain
Under the hood we find a very clean 5.0 liter V8 rated at 180 horsepower and fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor. A 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission is behind it and sends power, muscle car style, to the 10 bolt rear axle 3.73 gears. Power brakes are supplied with the typical disc/drum front/rear set up. Our consignor states the radiator, hoses, and thermostat are new and a new battery went in in September 2024. A list of other replacements, mostly OEM, will accompany the car.
Undercarriage
There's some surface rust on the usual components including the frame, the rear axle, stabilizer bar, and wheel components. Beyond the general patina, it's relatively clean underneath with no dripping oil, no invasive rust, and no road dirt. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil springs out back. The exhaust off the engine meets at the cat, then Y-split into two and heads to factory mufflers, exiting via straight black pipes just under the back of the car.
Drive-Ability
These were family cars, even as horsepower numbers and performance creeped up, so the cabin is comfortable and for the time, ergonomically adequate. A pump of the gas and we were off to the loop and this family car proves to have decent acceleration and G-body tracking, as well as decent handling for a midsize car with 65 series tires. GM raises the center console to create a semblance of an armrest and in the war of G-body points, the Monte wins on that account! All functional items in and around the car work as they should, and we drive this clean machine back to the mothership known as Classic Auto Mall. G-bodies are hot in the market, and they don't have to have a turbocharger to attract a crowd. What's the saying? There's no replacement for displacement! And we've seen some Monte's that will flat out beat anything on the road. But this is a well preserved, one owner, all stock example and at this point, that's essentially a unicorn.
